Through various conversations, one of the most consistent and powerful statements made is “nothing about us without us” simply put ensuring that any idea or theory about supporting any demographic should be done in consultation with said demographic.
Based on this idea DurhamONE decided to create a program that provides a platform for residents to share their thoughts and opinions on various subjects that have direct impact on them.
Identifying the need to engage in interactive dialogue with residents in a space that they deem to be safe, members of DurhamONE started to explore various ideas inclusive of community speaks focus groups.
Upon continued discussions members deemed that some of the most interactive and vibrant conversations happen within barbershops and hair dressing salons. With this idea in mind members started to explore best practices that would bring Cut the Talk into existence.
The purpose of Cut the Talk is to meet people at all levels of life and engage them in conversations and provide an outlet for them to be heard in a grassroots fashion. Identifying the need to engage in interactive dialogue with residents in a space that they deem to be safe, members of DurhamOne started to explore various ideas inclusive of community speaks focus groups.
Upon continued discussions members deemed that some of the most interactive and vibrant conversations happen within barbershops and hair dressing salons. With this idea in mind members started to explore best practices that would bring Cut the Talk into existence.
Individuals are invited to a local barbershop or salon to engage in dialogue on subject matters such as policing and community, health and well-being, planning for one’s future, and much more.
These sessions will include a facilitator, and barbers/stylists. Conversations will be interactive and free flowing to ensure thoughts, ideas and opinions are shared in a safe space.
Notes will be taken to capture the ideas and thoughts of the participants however; confidentiality will be implemented as it pertains to ‘who-said-what’ will be maintained. While engaging in these sessions’ participants will also be receivinghaircuts and styling.
Information collected during sessions will be shared with stakeholders (change agents)
